What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown fits over a tooth – much in the same way a helmet fits over a head. The crown protects a damaged tooth from weathering the elements, so you can keep the natural tooth and root for years to come. Without a crown, a damaged tooth may eventually need to be extracted and replaced with a prosthetic.
Our doctors use precious metal, porcelain fused to metal, or all-porcelain crowns. Primarily used for front teeth, all-porcelain crowns are strong and durable, giving you a long-lasting smile. They can also be shaded and contoured to perfectly match surrounding teeth for a more natural appearance.
The Dental Crown Process
After you are approved for the treatment, dental crowns can be placed in as few as two appointments. During the first, our doctor will administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable before removing the decayed or damaged structure from your tooth. They will then take a bite impression and place a temporary crown on your tooth for protection.
The bite impressions will be sent to a dental lab where a skilled technician will craft your permanent crown. When it arrives at our office a few weeks later, you’ll come back to have your temporary appliance removed and your permanent crown cemented in place. After any final adjustments, your smile will be ready to show off.

Unlike metal crowns, they can also be shaded and contoured to perfectly match surrounding teeth for a more natural appearance.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown
Dental crowns can keep a compromised tooth healthy and strong for decades, and neglecting to get one when you need it can lead to serious oral health issues. A few benefits of dental crowns include:
- Allowing the patient to chew comfortably
- Protecting the tooth so it won’t suffer further damage or need extraction
- Correcting several oral health problems with one treatment
- Since each crown is customized to suit each patient, they are virtually indistinguishable from real teeth
With proper oral hygiene at home and biannual dental exams and cleanings at our office, your crown may last for fifteen years or more.
